Hey, guys! Just letting you know that GKids’ US release of From Up on Poppy Hill is hitting select theaters beginning on March 15! Unfortunately, there will only be a limited release. The first screenings will be in New York, but more screenings will be shown in other places around the country at later dates. (see below for a list of theaters & dates) If you live near any of these locations, please consider seeing From Up on Poppy Hill in theaters! It’s a good way to show support for Studio Ghibli and hopefully make sure that they can make more awesome movies in the future. You can watch the trailer here, and check this page for more showtimes that will be added later.

The most common message I get: “Great drawings, must be the pen! What kind is it?” This is a bit rude and naive. No magic pen will replace decades of study and practice. These drawings were done with Crayolas from the dollar store on Crayola paper. (For the record, I might own every brush pen and regular pen in existence and I use them all, pentel might be my fav) It’s nice to have good tools, but you have to put the work in.

I get similar questions asking what kind of tablet I own or program I use to draw. While my medium does affect my work, it’s not the reason my art is “good.” Your art is what you put into it, you can use any tools to make it if the effort is there.

IMO, it’s one thing to ask for comparison’s sake. For example, I enjoy comparing materials with other artists because I like seeing what other people use for different effects, etc. I’ve found out about materials I wouldn’t have known about otherwise that way. Also, I have come across shit materials before (certain pens for inking come to mind), which I like to advise people to avoid. But yeah, assuming that the materials make the drawing really discredits the artist’s talent, and is not cool.

The raven is sometimes known as “the wolf-bird.” Ravens, like many other animals, scavenge at wolf kills, but there’s more to it than that. Both wolves and ravens have the ability to form social attachments and they seem to have evolved over many years to form these attachments with each other, to both species’ benefit.

There are a couple of theories as to why wolves and ravens end up at the same carcasses. One is that because ravens can fly, they are better at finding carcasses than wolves are. But they can’t get to the food once they get there, because they can’t open up the carcass. So they’ll make a lot of noise, and then wolves will come and use their sharp teeth and strong jaws to make the food accessible not just to themselves, but also to the ravens.

Ravens have also been observed circling a sick elk or moose and calling out, possibly alerting wolves to an easy kill. The other theory is that ravens respond to the howls of wolves preparing to hunt (and, for that matter, to human hunters shooting guns). They find out where the wolves are going and following. Both theories may be correct.

Wolves and ravens also play. A raven will sneak up behind a wolf and yank its tail and the wolf will play back. Ravens sometimes respond to wolf howls with calls of their own, resulting in a concert of howls and calls.
